Portugal Motorcycle Tour: Algarve to Douro

Your Portugal motorcycle tour begins at Málaga Airport, where the team meets you and takes you to the tour hotel. After motorcycle handover in the afternoon, a detailed tour briefing is followed by a shared dinner with the group.

The first riding stage takes you through the mountains of Andalusia toward Ronda on a winding mountain road, then through the Sierra Grazalema and the lowlands of the Guadalquivir river to Sierra Aracena and your overnight stop.

Leaving Aracena you pass through cork oak forests and the historic mines of Tharsis before crossing the Guadiana River at Mértola into Portugal. The route climbs through the Sierra de Monchique forests with the first views of the Atlantic before descending to the Algarve coast.

This stage follows the Algarve coastline to Cabo de São Vicente, the most south-westerly point of the European mainland. The praias of the Algarve display a variety of rock and sand formations along dramatic coastal cliffs, or you can explore the coast by boat if you prefer.

Leaving the Atlantic coast, the route heads through the Algarve hinterland past cork oaks and quintas, then back to the shore toward Lisbon. You take a ferry at Setúbal and stop at the Christo Rei monument for views over the city before arriving in Lisbon.

A full day in Lisbon to explore the capital on your own or with the tour guide. The Alfama quarter with its historic lanes, the Torre de Belém and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos are among the key sights of the city centre.

Before leaving the Atlantic coast you ride to Cabo da Roca, Europe's westernmost point. The route then continues to the medieval town of Óbidos, the pilgrimage site of Fátima, the monastery of Batalha and the Templar city of Tomar.

A visit to the Convento do Christo UNESCO World Heritage Site opens the day, followed by panoramic roads through mountain villages in the Serra da Lousã before arriving in Porto in time for dinner.

A rest day in Porto lets you explore the city at your own pace. The Ponte Dom Luís I bridge, the port wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, the tiled facades at São Bento station and the Livraria Lello bookshop are the main highlights of this stop.

Winding roads follow the Douro River through terraced vineyards. The destination for the day is a quinta winery where you stay overnight and learn about the cultivation of port wine while taking in the river landscape from all angles.

More vineyards line the Douro where it forms the border with Spain, followed by fortified villages that hint at a turbulent history. The stage then climbs into the Serra da Estrela Nature Park to your accommodation in Manteigas.

The Serra da Estrela stage climbs to Torre at 1,993 metres, the highest point on mainland Portugal, via one of Europe's finest mountain riding roads. The glacial Vale do Zêzere is another highlight before the afternoon is free for walking or relaxing.

Leaving Serra da Estrela you ride past grain fields, olive trees and old vineyards before crossing into Spain via the Alcántara bridge, one of the best-preserved Roman bridges in existence. The route continues through the Ribera del Guadiana to Zafra.

The final riding day brings more great roads in Andalusia through the Sierra Morena and the Montes de Málaga before returning to the start. A farewell dinner in Málaga in the evening marks the end of the tour.
