For most European passport holders entry is straightforward, but since 2025 it's tied to an online authorisation.

No Carnet de Passages, but left-hand traffic starts right at the ramp — the crossing itself is the bigger adjustment.
Checklist for the border
The moment things most often go wrong isn't the border, but the first roundabout after the ramp: left-hand traffic starts immediately, not only once you're outside the ferry terminal.
Documents
An EU driving licence is enough; an international one isn't needed for EU citizens.
Season
Less a question of closed mountain passes than one of daylight, rain and midges — especially in the Scottish Highlands.

Health
No mandatory vaccinations; the EHIC/GHIC still applies, but not for everything.
Most travel and health insurance policies exclude motorcycles over 125cc, and the EHIC/GHIC doesn't cover repatriation. Check your policy before booking.
Money
Pound sterling, not euros — and card rather than cash is the norm almost everywhere.
