Bringing Your Own Motorcycle to Spain
No carnet, no customs formalities: Spain is an EU and Schengen country, so your motorcycle travels on its normal registration.
Checklist for the border
- Original vehicle registration document (Teil I)
- Valid proof of insurance; a Green Card is worth carrying as extra evidence
- Card-format driving licence; non-EU licences also need an IDP
- Informal owner's confirmation if the motorcycle isn't yours
- Number plate legible and matching the documents
- Copies of all documents, on paper and digitally
No carnet, no import papers: as an EU and Schengen country, Spain requires no customs formalities for an EU-registered motorcycle. That makes entry very different from non-EU destinations like Morocco.

Safety on the Road in Spain
Spain is very safe for travellers; the real risk lies in the traffic, not in crime.
Health
Health & Travel Insurance
As an EU country, the European Health Insurance Card covers basic care, but it's still worth a closer look for motorcycling.
- Carry the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
- First-aid kit suited to falls
- Personal medication with a copy of the prescription
- Sun protection with a high SPF
- Check that your travel health insurance covers motorcycling above 125cc
Many travel and health insurance policies exclude motorcycles over 125cc, and the EHIC only covers basic state healthcare. Check your policy before booking, especially for adventure and mountain routes.
